Hoffman's usual quirky and engaging stories. No other fantasy writer creates her own unique worlds the way she does. If she ever does write a vampire story (which she has not) trust that the vampires and their world will not be like any others anyone has ever written.Many of these stories revisit characters from her several novels, a welcome revisit for me. Hoffman's novels are among the very few that I keep in my library to re-read. Many years later (I hope) when I die I'll likely have one of these books by my bedside.

I am so totally in love with so many of Nina Kiriki Hoffman's characters, that I think about them long after the books and stories are over, wondering how they are doing and what they are up to now. They are as real to me as people can be. I miss them when I'm away, and when I re-read her writing, it's like visiting dear friends once more.
I'd love to see some of her work adapted into film, but I do fear what Hollywood might make of my beloved friends and the worlds they inhabit. Still, when I see idiotic movies being made every year, rehashing the same old stuff, I always wonder "Haven't any filmmakers discovered this amazing woman's writing?" There's enough material in any one of her stories to keep production cranking for a very long time!
I just can't wait to read the next story!
Getting a collection of Nina Hoffman's short fiction is always a treasure. She is one of my favorite authors, and she didn't disappoint me. Her stories are whimsical, quirky, and often breathtakingly beautiful. I cannot recommend her books too highly, her characters are the best of what we can hope to be. They may have problems, but there are reasons for them, and they can be lived with, if not resolved. The first book of hers that I read, I picked up because of a back-page review (it may have been Kirkus reviews) that said "Other authors show and tell. Hoffman sings." I couldn't say it better myself.
This collection of short stories is a great introduction to Nina Kiriki Hoffman's work. So if you love her writing as much as I do, you'll love this collection. If you've never read her work before, this is a good work to dip your toes in.
Love Hoffman's writing. I have not finished the book and will update when I complete the stories. So far enjoying the shorts.
My daughter lent me her copy of this lovely little collection. While this is my first encounter with Nina Kiriki Hoffman, it will not be my last. Each story is a glimpse into a strange, almost unsettling, world that is surprisingly comfortable to inhabit. Many of the characters appear in later stories as side characters, perhaps having aged several years. The prose is smooth and engaging. The stories are haunting, but somehow comfortably familiar. I really like this writer.
I'm a longtime fan of Nina Kiriki Hoffman's work, so this collection of short stories was a pleasant opportunity to visit some old friends from her other books and stories, and to meet interesting new characters. Many of the stories in "Permeable Borders" are linked by the interconnected characters, showing them in different contexts and lights. All told, a very enjoyable collection!
Always enjoyable, Ms. Hoffman's stories are where I go to feel better about the world. While there are some dark characters and situations, her always positive approach to the slightly (sometimes more) supernatural developments make for a satisfying solution.
